Awaken The Sloth - Tips to Build Momentum and Motivation

I'll admit it. Sometimes I feel as slow as a sloth. Sometimes I move as slow as a sloth. It's been hot this summer, humid, and sticky too. Add to that the drag of Covid, and the seemingly endless barrage of distressing news. All of this was a seductive invitation for me to step back, slow down, and sit quietly for a while to process. Not knowing quite what to do, not knowing quite what to say. I surrendered to stillness. So, apart from the daily necessities, along with my work with clients, I've been somewhat off the grid.

Now, as Autumn approaches, a refreshing breeze reaches beyond the gathering inertia of my mind. And I'm clear.

It's time to awaken the sloth.

What I know, is that even when it feels impossible to move forward, there are things we can do get the proverbial ball rolling again.

What I've noticed with myself, and my clients, is that getting stuck often starts with resistance. Resistance to change. Resistance to uncertainty. Resistance to discomfort. And the longer we stay in resistance, the more likely we will lapse into inertia. We can get used to it, it's comfortable. And, after a while, it's easy to forget what we're resisting in the first place.

Resistance is like a big fat bundle of thoughts that scares us into staying stuck. A thought bundle that gets bigger and more forceful as time goes on. Because this thought bundle seems so big and unwieldy, it feels too hard to tackle. So, it's much easier to just to stay stuck. And then to wait, and wait, and wait... for motivation.

And, more times than I'd like to admit, I realize that motivation rarely, if ever, drops into my lap. In fact, waiting for motivation usually creates far more frustration than actual motivation.

This said, motivation is actually not incredibly difficult to find. That's because it's often found on the other side of action. Sometimes just one step will help build the momentum of yet another, and another step. This momentum leads to the motivation to keep on going. These steps can include anything from a plan of action, a paragraph on a page, the outline of a project, or a preliminary sketch. The goal here, is to start something, even when you don't feel motivated, to gradually build momentum, and motivation.

This might not be new news. But sometimes we (I) need to hear it again, and again.

Here are some tips to build momentum, and motivation. During times like this, I like to keep this list handy:

Change up hypnotic routines. Include new, or rarely eaten, foods in your diet. Take a walk in a completely different direction. Add ritual and variety to your evening routines. Make a new social connection. By doing new things, you will help reduce resistance to uncertainty and unfamiliarity. In addition, this will help activate your brain, making it easier to generate new ideas.

Awaken hidden talents. Engage in enjoyable activities which will awaken aspects of yourself that may have fallen asleep. Think back to what you loved to do as a child, and would love to do again. Begin with small, manageable actions to access this place within you. Experiment with activities within music, art, literature, physical pursuits, or spirituality to spark your creative flow. Awakening your hidden talents, with patience, and acceptance, will help you feel more alive, eager, and motivated to move forward.

Break goals into very small tasks, and write them down. This will help you break out of built-up resistance to big, impossible-feeling goals. Enjoy a sense of accomplishment as you check things off your list. This sense of accomplishment will help you build momentum and motivation to do more.

Get comfortable with discomfort. Moving out of your comfort zone simply means you'll feel uncomfortable. And that's okay. We can all handle discomfort. It's temporary. Plus, moving through to the other side of discomfort feels GREAT!

Acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how 'small.' When we only celebrate our biggest accomplishments, we devalue what it takes to get there. Stay motivated by acknowledging your progress, step by step, along your way to reaching your goal. When we're aware of our progress, our goals feel much more accessible.

Give yourself enough structure. Structure will help you contain and focus your efforts. Finding the right structure, especially if you're resistant to structure, is essential. This might mean a schedule that fits your style, or some type of creative set-up for your workspace. Organization and structure will help you clarify what works, and what you want. And, clarity feeds motivation.

Show up. Have faith in your own creative process to help bring you forward. The creative process requires your commitment to take action, and show up, again, and again and again.

Though I didn't include it on the list, EFT Tapping is a powerful way to release the fear and resistance that keeps us stuck. In addition, tapping facilitates effective brain function, improved mood, and enhanced creative flow. All of these, of course, are essential for forward movement.

Wishing You Peace and Wellbeing,

6 Tips to Organize Your Thoughts

Anything can be organized, even your thoughts. We say that we can't help the way we think, but we can! There may be things in life that we have no control over, but our thoughts are not one of them.

When a thought comes to mind, you make the choice to accept or reject that thought. Your choice may be conscious or subconscious, but either way it's your choice.

Our brains function basically like computers. They are constantly processing information; incoming thoughts and outgoing actions. At times, so many thoughts are floating around in our heads that we can't keep them all straight. If we don't purge the excess in some way, we become overwhelmed, and process this information in a much slower, less efficient way than we would like.

The list below provides 6 tips to help organize your thoughts. My hope is that these tips will provide some relief for the barrage of thoughts that come from our fast-paced lives. Clutter is clutter, whether it comes in the form of things in our homes, or the thoughts in our brains. We need to purge clutter from our brains, just like we purge clutter from our homes.

Document your thoughts - This seems like a simple idea and it is. There are times when we have ideas, or thoughts about a multitude of things. If you don't get those things out of your head and documented in some way, you're in danger of forgetting them, or becoming overwhelmed. Use the medium that works best for you such as - pen & paper, text message, voice message, phone app, etc.

Sort your thoughts - After you document all your thoughts, tasks, concerns, ideas, questions, etc., sort them into their respective categories.

Prioritize your thoughts - Due dates and deadlines are priorities based on importance and urgency. Many times, due dates and deadlines determine our priorities. Other times, our troubles cause us to worry, and those thoughts become our priority. Taking an action on those worrisome thoughts, however small it may be, can possibly reduce the stress, so you can purposefully re-prioritize the thought for another time.

Reframing a thought - Reframing refers to changing the way a thought, concept or idea is considered. This can be helpful when you are problem solving. Looking at an issue in a different way may provide a viable solution.

No multi-tasking - It's been determined that multi-tasking is counter-productive. When you try to perform more than one task at a time, your brain spends more time trying to switch between tasks, or thoughts. Focus on one thought at a time for optimal productivity.

Mental clarity - Sometimes we need a break. Thinking can be exhausting. In order to organize our thoughts, we need mental clarity. There are many ways to achieve mental clarity and it's different for all of us. Taking a walk in the fresh air does it for me. Meditation works for some, while exercise does it for others. Find something that works for you and practice it regularly.

Your Subconscious Mind And Why It Is So Important

Did you know that you have at least two minds? Some experts believe that humans have three minds but we will keep it simple in this article. You have your conscious mind which is active when you are. It fills your head with chatter all of the time.

Then there is your subconscious mind which never sleeps. It remembers everything and will hold all of your values and beliefs. It shapes who you are and whether you will be successful or not. Fortunately you can change what is stored in your subconscious mind.

Your Subconscious doesn't care about Good and Bad

Perhaps "doesn't care" is not the right term - unable to distinguish between good and bad is probably more appropriate. Your subconscious mind will accept any information that you feed into it. The more that you think and act on that information the stronger it becomes.

Here is an example. If you had a bad experience in your life then this can become an irrational fear in your subconscious mind. Let's say that you were forced to speak in public and it didn't go well. You were extremely embarrassed by this event and you do not want to experience this again.

So you create a belief in your subconscious that you cannot do public speaking. You avoid every possible opportunity to speak in public and this strengthens the belief in your subconscious. This is a bad thing for you but your subconscious doesn't care. All it wants to do is protect you.

If you have negative thoughts about a specific thing or event then this will form a limiting belief in your subconscious mind. So if you have a goal to find a higher paying job then one of the skills that you will need is likely to be the ability to speak in public.

Your Conscious Mind is the Gatekeeper

Everything that is in your subconscious mind has been allowed to end up there via your conscious mind. So if you continually have negative thoughts about public speaking then you are telling your subconscious mind to protect you from it.

The good news here is that you can change your thoughts in your conscious mind to remove or replace limiting beliefs in your subconscious. This is something that you will need to work on and it is not magic. You need to be persistent if you want to make changes to your subconscious.

Neutralize Negative Thoughts

You can neutralize the negative thoughts that you experience with positive ones. So if you have a thought that says "I can never speak in public" you can neutralize this with "I can speak in public because I can do anything".

By neutralizing your negative thoughts in this way you will send the right signals to your subconscious mind to pave the way to change any limiting beliefs. The next step in the process is to show your subconscious that you really mean business by taking action.

Tackle your Irrational Fears

Whatever irrational fears you have the best way to tackle them is to just do it anyway. So if you have a fear of public speaking then get out there and do some public speaking! You can start in a small way with a friendly audience. Learn as much as you can about the subject and practice regularly.

Yes, It Is Possible To Speed Read: Further Steps To Learn Speed Reading

Before you proceed to the advanced steps to learn speed reading, let me remind you about how essential it is to have the habit of reading every day, and reading silently for the specific purpose of becoming a speed reader. We can compare this to a person who has first time arrived to a place. In his first glance, all he sees are unfamiliar, and he has to look at all things surrounding him one by one to identify them. If he seldom visited that same place, there were few things he would recognize, but only few. The more frequent he goes to this place, the more familiar it becomes, and even without turning his head from left to right, he can tell what are on those sides. You will appreciate the point I am reiterating when you start doing the following steps:

1. Learn to read in clumps. Most people tend to read word by word. It is therefore understood that when you read this way, your reading is slow, as a matter of fact, too slow. You have to learn to take in more than one word at a time. How you should read a text must be similar to how the lines of an editorial are typed in newspapers - they are clumped. Notice how faster it is to read news in a newspaper; since each line is typed short (like in clump), your eyes grasp all they see in the line then quickly glide down to the next line, taking in again the whole line of words as one unit. Try doing it now, and you will see that it works; your reading speed will increase.

2. Be familiar with word groups. First, let me tell the difference between a word clump and a word group. Like I explained above, a word clump is words taken in as one and read as one unit. By slicing the sentence into two, three or four parts, depending on the length of the sentence, you can form word clumps. It will depend also on the scope of your peripheral vision (Later, on the third step, I will explain what peripheral vision is.) the count of word clumps you can make in a sentence. This only shows that word clumps are words that are grouped but without one-whole meaning. Word groups, on the other hand, are common group words that possess definite meaning. They are, we may say, common expressions and figures of speech, like idioms, verb phrase, collocations, phrasal verbs, etc. The taking in of word groups does not rely on your peripheral vision, but on your familiarity to common expressions. Once your eyes scan a familiar expression, you do not have to glide your sight to all the words in that phrase to be able to see what the next words are. Your eyes and brain quickly decode the familiar expression, and you can swiftly jump to the next word clump or word group. So, the more familiar you are with different word groups, the faster you read.

3. Stretch your peripheral vision. Stretching your peripheral vision is expanding the scope your eyes can see in a glance. But what is peripheral vision? Look around you, and then fixate your eyes on something. The thing where you fixate your eyes on is vivid, of course. The other objects close to that thing and which you may be seeing too, but not as vivid as the one your eyes are fixated, are objects of your peripheral vision. The farthest your peripheral vision can see, the better. If your peripheral vision can catch four or five words in a single glance, it means that you read fast. If you can take in seven words or more at a time, you are a speed reader.

To sum up, it is your peripheral vision that allows you to read as many words as you can in just one glance, and if you have a narrow vision, if you cannot read in clumps, and if you are familiar with only few word groups, then you will not be able to do speed reading.
